Author Interview: Kristi Ayers

Can you tell us a little bit about your books?

One Petal Flower was my first self published book that came out in 2012.  It's a young adult paranormal romance that centers around a spirit that won't rest in the afterlife until he knows his girlfriend is okay and moving on with her life.  Moving on also means accepting there are such things as werewolves, especially protective ones, because where there are "good" monsters there are also "bad" monsters.

Nev is my contemporary young adult romance that came out in July 2015.  It's a slightly unconventional love story in that two teens who would normally never end up together find love that's always been there from the start.  I touched upon a few real aspects that some teens endure, but leveled it out with carefully placed humor.      


Do you remember the title of the first story you wrote?
 
I don't remember the title of my very first book because I was 12 at the time.  I just recently went through my chest and found little pieces of many stories that I forgot I had written.  I could see my love for writing has always been with me, even at that young of an age. 


What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?
 
I write when I feel inspiration strike, which may not be everyday.  Sometimes life gets in the way and a week or two (sometimes three) will go by without any writing whatsoever.  I've found out fatigue/stress will impede the flow of writing.  In that case it's best to wait/rest/meditate and write when I feel good.  I recently went back to being an NICU nurse so I've had to do a little juggling lately.


Where do you find inspiration?
 
I usually don't find it, it finds me.  I can be watching a movie, reading a book, anything to spark the imagination, but sometimes it's real life that will get the juices flowing.  It's the perfect set of words that evokes a feeling deep within me.  Other times it's a dream I had or a scene on a TV show that I wasn't expecting. 


What have you learned about publishing that you didn’t know about when you first started writing?

Self publishing a book is the easy part, but it's the advertising that's difficult and frustrating.  Sometimes I feel like a single ant in a colony that contains thousands of others.  I'd honestly love for all of us to get noticed for our hard work that we put in each of our books. 


What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
 
Read of course, but also spend time with my kids, go to the lake, watch my favorite shows, and travel.


Can you tell us about your future projects?

I'm over the moon excited about my current WIP.  I've decided to write about college-age characters this time.  It's still evolving in my mind so there isn't much I can divulge.  I'm letting it play out in my mind like a movie, getting to know the characters bit by bit.
