Summer at the Chateau: Every End has a New Beginning by Jennifer Bohnet is a book that was recommended to me by a friend who knows I love Wendy Holden.
The blurb:
When Pixie Sampson's husband tragically dies, she inherits the beautiful Château Quiltu in Brittany, Northern France.
But unbeknown to her, she also inherits a mysterious lodger, Justine Martin and her 4-year-old son Ferdie.
Heartbroken and with her adventurous Mum, Gwen in tow, they travel to France to put the Château on the market but are soon drawn into a quest to seek the Château's secrets.
Who is Justine? Why is she living at the Château? How did she know her husband?
Over the Summer months, the Château fills with family and laughter and secrets are discovered and old wounds begin to heal.
Review 3 stars
The story about Pixie Sampson starts with the idea of moving to France once she and her husband retire. However, those plans are put on the back burner when Frank dies and leaves Pixie to find out about things he should have told her himself.
I wish the author had spoken a bit more about the changes in Pixie's life after Frank's death. It seemed a bit rushed for her to go from finding out about the house in France to going there.
There are a few repetitive passages, and it seemed there was a lot of dwelling, which made me quite cross with Pixie. However, as the story progressed and things began to unravel, the monotonous repetitiveness of specific passages stopped, and the action moved along much better.
The author lacked an excellent grasp of the French culture, and there were things that I had to re-read because, as someone who has lived in France (Paris and Normandy) and has visited Brittany a lot, they didn't ring true.
However, the story was good enough for me to want to read until the end. Hence, I give it three stars.
