This is another story that I started writing around 2014. The idea has evolved a lot since then, and I can finally work on this book at leisure. :)
I just kicked my feet up and giggled. This is a rough excerpt of #CasadeAnimas #ROUGHDRAFT
Cassie turned, eyes meeting mine.
And something shifted.
It wasn’t just attraction, it was
something sharper, deeper, more instinctive.
A pull.
Like standing on the edge of a stage,
the crowd roaring below, every ounce of energy pressing against me, daring me
to jump and lose myself in it.
Except this wasn’t a stage.
It was her.
Her presence hummed in the air, charged
like static before a storm. Not overwhelming, not
suffocating—but impossible to ignore.
I wanted to step forward.
I wanted to see what would happen if I
touched her and let the energy slip past the careful barriers I kept around
myself.
It reminded me of the moment before I
would open my mouth to sing the first note. The energy was already seeping into
my skin. Cassandra was like music and already threatened to take over me. She
was enticing me to the point of no return.
I shook my head hard.
Too hard.
Almost whiplash-inducing.
She blinked. “Are
you not happy I’m in a better mood?”
I swallowed, my pulse hammering in my
temples.
I stepped back.
Too obvious. Too sudden. Too
much.
“No, I…”
My brain scrambled for an excuse. “There’s water. The tree.”
What tree? Ah, you pabo! I
screamed at myself inwardly because it was clear that I was an idiot. The
closest tree was five feet away, its
branches nowhere near me.
She frowned.
I forced my voice to be steady. “Are
you ready to go?”
She hesitated but eventually nodded,
turning toward the car.
I stared at the ground, exhaling through
my teeth.
You’re not going to open
and swallow me whole, are you?
Traitorous Earth.
I stomped forward, following her back to
the car, pretending I hadn’t just come dangerously close to
something irreversible.
